Symmetric equilibria in stochastic timing games

چکیده
We construct subgame-perfect equilibria with mixed strategies for symmetric stochastic timing games with arbitrary strategic incentives. The strategies are qualitatively different for local firstor second-mover advantages, which we analyse in turn. When there is a local second-mover advantage, the players may conduct a war of attrition with stopping rates that we characterize in terms of the Snell envelope from the general theory of optimal stopping, which is very general but provides a clear interpretation. With a local firstmover advantage, stopping typically results from preemption and is abrupt. Equilibria may differ in the degree of preemption, precisely at which points it is triggered. We provide an algorithm to characterize where preemption is inevitable and to establish the existence of corresponding payoff-maximal symmetric equilibria.

Nash Equilibria in unconstrained Stochastic Games of Resource Extraction
A class of nonzero-sum symmetric stochastic games of capital accumulation/resource extraction is considered. It is shown that Nash equilibria in the games with some natural constraints are also equilibrium solutions in unconstrained games and dominate in the Pareto sense an equilibrium leading to exhausting the entire resource stock in the first period of the game. One example is given to ilust...
متن کاملNash Equilibria for Stochastic Games with Asymmetric Information-Part 1: Finite Games
A model of stochastic games where multiple controllers jointly control the evolution of the state of a dynamic system but have access to different information about the state and action processes is considered. The asymmetry of information among the controllers makes it difficult to compute or characterize Nash equilibria. Using common information among the controllers, the game with asymmetric...
متن کاملEquilibrium transitions in finite populations of players
We discuss stochastic dynamics of finite populations of individuals playing games. We review recent results concerning the dependence of the long-run behavior of such systems on the number of players and the noise level. In the case of two-player games with two symmetric Nash equilibria, when the number of players increases, the population undergoes multiple transitions between its equilibria.
متن کاملEquilibria in Continuous Time Preemption Games with Spectrally-Negative Markovian Payoffs
This paper studies timing games in continuous time where payoffs are stochastic, strongly Markovian, and spectrally negative. The main interest is in characterizing equilibria where players preempt each other along almost every sample path as opposed to equilibria where one of the players acts as if she were the (exogenously determined) leader in a Stackelberg game. It is found that the existen...
متن کاملCaller Number Five and Related Timing
There are two varieties of timing games in economics: Having more predecessors helps in a war of attrition and hurts in a pre-emption game. This paper introduces and explores a spanning class with rank-order payoffs that subsumes both as special cases. We assume a continuous time setting with unobserved actions and complete information, and explore how equilibria of these games capture many eco...
